December is Safe Toys and Gifts Month!

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle all the way!

Give your kids safe toys this year and don’t worry as they play!

It’s that time of year again. Chestnuts are roasting, snowflakes are falling, and wallets are emptying as you prepare for holiday season. But before you swipe that credit card, it’s important to consider your gifts’ safety–especially gifts for children. In 2007 alone, over 19 million toys were recalled for everything from paint laced with lead to regrettably “bite-size” magnets.

Follow these guidelines (provided by Healthfinder) for safe toy giving:

Look for toys with a solid, sturdy build. You want to avoid toys that can break, be crushed, or pulled apart easily.

  1. Check the label for any fire hazards and to ensure that the toy has passed a safety inspection (Tip: Look for the letters “ASTM,” which means it has met the American Society for Testing and Materials standards.)
  2. Read the instructions so the toy is properly assembled and used safely.
  3. Do not choose:
    1. Toys with small parts and sharp edges
    2. Guns or other toys that shoot flying objects
    3. Crayons and markers that are not clearly labeled nontoxic
    4. Toys with ropes and cords
    5. Toys that could shatter into small pieces if broken
    6. Electric toys with heating elements

Keep the  holiday season joyful by choosing toys that are fun and safe for your little loved ones!
